Body Contouring Options: Overview

Body Contouring Options

Body contouring is optimally performed when one achieves their ideal weight. However, some of the procedures below can be performed before that weight is attained.

The following is an overview of body contouring options that contain additional and more specific information on each procedure or technology mentioned below.
The "best" is difficult to determine and depends on a personal exam and discussion of your desires, your anatomy, your goals, the benefits and the limitations of the particular technology or procedure. I often combine both surgical and non-surgical technology to achieve a superior result that I couldn’t otherwise achieve with only one procedure or technology. We refer to this combination of treatments as synergy, simply explained on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the absolute best result — 1 + 1 = 3, 5, 6 or even a 10!

Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Breasts "sag" or "hang" because the "skin bra" is larger than the breast tissue. Over time, the weight of breast tissue can continue to stretch the skin and acts like a "rock in a sock.”

Some women develop breasts that sag, but more often the cycle of expansion and contraction of breast tissue (during pregnancy and/or after weight loss) results in a permanent stretching of the skin. The once full and rounded breast can take the shape of a bowling pin. Technically, the "viscoelastic elastic" properties of the skin have been irreversibly altered. An analogy is like a pair of pantyhose that have lost their elasticity. Unfortunately, there are no known reliable non-surgical techniques to significantly shrink the skin.

The abdominoplasty procedure is designed to contour the abdomen by:

1. Removing excess skin and fat.
2. Reestablishing the position of the rectus abdominis muscles (or abs).
3. Contouring the diet-resistant fat accumulation of the flanks (when needed) using liposuction.
