Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, provides a beautiful, feminine silhouette. For over 45 years, women have requested breast implants to reshape small, disproportionate or misshapen breasts. Women may select breast augmentation because of changes they experience in their breasts due to age, pregnancy, weight loss or cancer. Other women may desire breast augmentation to improve genetically small breasts.

Breast Implants

Women seeking breast augmentation today are custom fitted for their breast implants at Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett’s office. Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett will take many breast measurements to help ensure a precise breast implant fit to accommodate for unique features of the breasts, including:

Breast implant shapes are generally round or tear dropped. There are several breast profiles to select from.
Diversity in breast projection types exist. Some women elect greater upper pole projection. Others prefer more volume in the lower pole.
Breast implants range in width size to achieve an optimal match from measurement to implant.
Saline or Silicone Gel are the two breast implant material types. Saline breast implants have a synthetic shell filled with sterile saline water. Silicone Gel implants have a synthetic shell filled with silicone gel.
Variations in breast implants exist. We custom order each implant based on each patient’s cosmetic goals and physiologic needs.

The Incision

Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett will examine the anatomy of the breast tissue, skin quality, and the extent of desired enlargement in order to determine the appropriate incision location. There are three types of incisions that may be used in breast augmentation, including:

Inframammary Incision, at the breast crease
Periaerola Incision, at the nipple line.
Transaxillary Incision, under the arm pit

Breast Implant Placement

Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett will examine the amount and quality of glandular tissue and fat in the breasts to help determine the best location for the breast implants. Location choices include:

Sub-muscular breast implant placement which is a location under the pectoral muscle.
Sub-mammary / sub glandular breast implant placement which is the location above the pectoral muscle and under breast tissue.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett will provide a complete list of pre-operative and post operative instructions to follow after the procedure. Most women return to normal daily activities within a few days following the surgery. Usually, by 6 weeks, there are no restrictions to returning to full exercise. There are recovery aids such as a compression garment, a “pain pump” (constant infusion of local anesthetic), and muscle relaxant medication available to assist in the recovery process.
