What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enhancement, breast implant surgery, and even a “boob job” can provide, a beautiful, feminine silhouette and fullness of the breasts. Many improvements and innovations have occurred since 1961 when the first silicone breast implant was placed. Since this time, women have requested and have more options than ever. The quality of breast implants has never been better or safer. The choices now available with the improved breast implants allow Dr. Hardesty to reshape small, disproportionate breasts, asymmetrical breasts, or misshapen breasts. Women may select breast augmentation because of changes they experience in their breasts due to age, pregnancy, weight loss, or cancer. Other women may desire this procedure to improve their genetically small breasts.

Choosing Your Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation Incisions

Dr. Hardesty will examine the anatomy of the breast tissue, skin quality, and the extent of the desired enlargement in order to determine the appropriate incision location. There are three types of incisions that may be used including:

• Inframammary Incision, at the breast crease
• Periareolar Incision, at the nipple line.
• Transaxillary Incision, under the armpit

Breast Implant Placement

Dr. Hardesty will examine the amount and quality of glandular tissue and fat in the breasts to help determine the best location for the breast implants. Location choices include:

• Sub-muscular breast implant placement which is a location under the pectoral muscle.
• Sub-mammary / sub glandular breast implant placement which is the location above the pectoral muscle and under the breast
• Biplanar / dual plane the majority of the breast implant is covered by the pectoralis muscle and only a small amount of the lower implant is not.
• When desired implants can be placed higher on the chest wall resulting in a rounder and resultant upper pole fullness. Also, if the implant is placed lower on the chest wall, a more “teardrop” breast shape can be achieved.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Dr. Hardesty will provide a complete list of pre-operative and post-operative instructions to follow after the procedure. Most women return to normal daily activities within a few days following the surgery. Usually, by 6 weeks, there are no restrictions on returning to full exercise. There are recovery aids such as a compression garment, a non-narcotic “pain pump” (constant infusion of local anesthetic), and muscle relaxant medication available to assist in the recovery process.
