Breast Augmentation Breast Lift Combination
Home » Breast » Breast Augmentation and Lift
The choice for a breast augmentation and breast lift treatment plan has become more common in recent years for several reasons, including:
- The added weight of a breast implant in a mid-size breasted woman may create the risk for breast sagginess
- Misshapen or tubular breasts may be served well with a breast implant to achieve more upper pole projection. A breast lift will help reposition existing breast tissue for an ideal contour and improvement of sagging
- Droopy breasts may be improved with breast augmentation and a breast lift to complete the enhancement
- Asymmetric breasts may respond well to the breast augmentation breast lift procedure.
- Inability to wear certain clothes (halter top and certain bathing suits)
Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett, and the patient usually make joint decisions about the need for the combination during an initial consultation. Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett will evaluate skin quality, degree of sagging, and appearance of stretch marks. Then, they will make decisions about the appropriate incision location and technique.
The IncisionsThere are three fundamental incision types that may be used in this procedure. The decision for the type of incision is associated with the extent of breast sagging and the size of the breasts. Generally speaking, the more excess skin to breast tissue ratio, the longer the scar will need to be.
- Pericentric (around the nipple) Mastopexy: For women with minimal to moderate breast sagging, shape deformity, contour irregularity, or secondary revisional surgery to improve bottoming out. This incision extends around the areola.
- Vertical Mastopexy (lollipop): For moderate breast lift requirements. This incision extends around the areola and down the lower portion of the breast.
- Inverted T Mastopexy: For larger breasted women and those with extensive sagging. This incision is located around the areola, extending down and across the breast crease.
There are a variety of techniques that may be used for this procedure. The fundamental technique is as follows:
- Place the breast implant
- Reshape the breast tissue form
- Reposition the breast tissue
- Reduce the skin envelope
- Reshape the areola to a more normal appearance
Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett provide a recovery plan that reduces the risk of complications and allows for a smooth transition to the final appearance. Patients usually return to daily activites in 5 - 7 days. A "pain pump" can be placed that drips in a local anesthetic agent through a small catheter, thus reducing pain without narcotic pain pills. Women usually resume normal activities within a few days following the procedure. Women often comment that they now can wear all types of clothes that they couldn't wear before. The results are immediate and last for many years.
