Liposuction, also known as body contouring, is one of the most popular procedures for people within 15 pounds of their weight or those that are overweight and wish to treat localized areas of fat. Liposuction targets specific areas of the body, including:

  • Bulging areas of the thighs
  • Excess fat in the hips, back and buttocks
  • Protrusion in the abdomen and waist
  • Fat pockets in the upper arms
  • Fat pockets in the inner knee, calves and ankles
  • Excess fat in the breasts
  • Small fat pockets in the cheeks, chin and neck

Liposuction Procedure

Riverside liposuction experts Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett may use liposuction for many types of plastic surgery procedures such as facelift, breast reduction or tummy tuck. Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss, but may improve areas of the body for an enhanced appearance. Liposuction for the obese may improve the ability to walk and participate in a higher activity level. Other procedures that may be performed in conjunction with liposuction include: tummy tuck to tighten stomach muscles and endermologie to improve cellulite.

The Incision

Small incisions for liposuction are made in key locations that are discreet. These incisions allow Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett access to the treatment area.

The Liposuction Technique

Dr. Hardesty and Dr. Bennett offer several types of liposuction. Depending on the location and density of the fat, one of several techniques will be offered:

  • Tumescent Pretreatment: minimal invasive injections of a mixture of local anesthetic, adrenaline, and saline just below the skin to target fat cells and minimize bruising and swelling after the procedure
  • Suction Assisted Lipoplasty (SAL): use of a cannula with a vacuum suction to draw the fat from the body
  • Ultrasound assisted lipoplasty (UAL): insertion of a thin tube with an ultrasound probe to melt and dislodge excess fat

Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction recovery is usually quite straight forward. Usually, you can return to daily activities in 24 – 48 hours. There are instructions that will be provided to help ensure a smooth recovery. This includes: medications to cease and take, activities that should be avoided, and a compression garment that should be worn to refine the shape of the newly contoured figure. Liposuction is the only proven safe and effective choice for the permanent removal of fat cells.
